One of our most active members, Rick Karr is here every day at a quarter to 8am like clockwork. He's almost always in a good mood, but you should be warned that he'll be quick to tease if he can find an opening. The good news is that he can take it just as well as he can dish it out, so don't be shy.
He's a great guy, and I hate to admit it, but on the rare day that he doesn't make it in, the 8am class just isn't the same.
What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
I was in a rut at another workout place doing cardio for 45 min looking at the clock and reading a book on the elliptical or stairmaster and then doing some weights on the machines. I was bored stiff and not seeing any results, just staying the same.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
My daughter tried CF in Arizona and said I should try it. After reading some things about it I thought, you’ve got to be kidding! It took a lot to go the first time and when I got there, not surprisingly, I was the oldest person in the room. I really don’t feel my age so I said let’s do this. It has been over 3 years now and I still look forward to going almost every day (I am a little OCD about this, but who cares?
I had never done 99% of the stuff we do in CF and really couldn’t do much of it to start with but with your encouragement and subtle jabs I can do quite a bit now, some of it even close to how it should be done. All the CF people are great and supportive. I am never going to participate in the “games”, but really feel how much I have improved since I began…..I have lost weight, made a lot of new friends, can wear CF gear proudly, and can do things like pull-ups, box jumps, wall balls, etc whichI would have never thought I could do at close to 70 years old! My mental age is about 35 years, seriously! I look forward to getting there every day.
What was your first success?
Just coming the first time, but really I think box jumps was a proud achievement and making it thru some of the workouts was pretty exciting and now feeling that I can do almost anything there
What are you working on now?
I still want to do double unders, toes to bar, a kipping pull up to mention a few. 2 years ago I would have said this will never happen but I really feel I can still do this stuff. Pretty amazing.
What’s your favorite CrossFit Sandpoint memory?
There are too many to mention all of them but some very fun times with the other members during classes and socially also. I have left the gym laughing so many times and very energized, what could be better? I still cant get the “hair pie” incident erased from my fading memory…..so funny. CF is a very unique experience.
